Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, 1907-1933

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin is a $20 gold coin (or “double eagle”) that was produced by the United States Mint from 1907 to 1933. It is named after its designer, the great American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In his efforts to beautify American coinage, President Theodore Roosevelt put Saint-Gaudens up to the task of designing the coin in 1904.

After several delays due to Saint-Gaudens’ declining health and difficulty with the high relief of his design, the coin was released in 1907 with a lower relief. The initial coins controversially did not include the words “In God We Trust”, but Congress intervened and required the motto on later versions.
