COVID-19 Doesn’t Need to Kill our Economy!

Research clearly shows that COVID-19 could have been contained and eliminated in the U.S. at the beginning of the year, if not for a lack of cohesive federal policy, missteps on testing and tracing, and a national culture focused on civil rights, instead of human rights. Typically, politics has the ability to entice or inhibit business in America, but rarely has the overwhelming effect we are witnessing today. By politicizing the coronavirus, we have permitted a faction committed to civil rights to cancel out the country’s human rights. And followers are paying the price. As an example, one study concluded that infection and mortality rates are greater in areas where Fox News’ Sean Hannity reaches his largest audience segments. Hannity had strongly downplayed the pandemic’s severity, until the inevitable reality became apparent.

Even at this point, with appropriate testing, a well-planned two-week lockdown, of all but essential services could allow the country to contain, identify and respond to the coronavirus infection. But the current, scattershot, everybody do-your-own-thing response is only facilitating greater infection and a greater waste of time and effort. We are smarter than this! We don’t have to kill our economy, but we do have to kill this virus and it can’t happen by putting civil rights above human rights. It’s not acceptable that someone’s inconvenience can trump someone’s right to life. The current process is forcing our first responders and medical personnel to fight a battle that we apparently have no true conviction to win, only survive, at least some of us.

A Harvard Kennedy School study reported that, “We are receiving an incredible number of studies and solid data showing that consuming far-right media and social media content was strongly associated with low concern about the virus at the onset of the pandemic.” A University of Illinois study focused on how Americans’ media diets affected their beliefs about the coronavirus. It found a great majority of respondents getting information from mainstream media shared an accurate understanding of the pandemic’s severity, where those who relied on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh were far more likely to believe in conspiracy theories or unfounded rumors, such as the belief that taking vitamin C could prevent infection, the Chinese government intentionally released the virus, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had  exaggerated the pandemic’s threat, in order to “damage the Trump presidency.”

Hopefully, we will put politics aside and focus on the fastest road to recovery. But regardless, a great deal of damage has already been done and recession is already in the cards.
